Division Overview

Hubbell Power Systems (HPS) engages in the design and manufacture of a wide variety of products used by utilities. Today, HPS is deeply engaged in product solutions for OSP Communication utility purposes, and has been actively growing that segment of the business. HPS roots have historically been in high voltage transmission, distribution, substation, underground products used by electric utilities. HPS products are also used in the civil construction, transportation, gas and water industries.

Position Overview

The UX Design Engineer will lead the definition and execution of a User Centric Design process that enables user experience to be a competitive differentiator for Hubbell

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with Hubbell product managers and product owners to understand desired application capabilities.  
  • Lead the definition and maintenance of accurate user personas for targeted product(s) 
  • Prioritize, plan and help conduct user research including techniques such as user interviews, task analysis, usability testing, surveys, A/B testing, site analytics, and user personas to understand user behavior and validate solutions.
  • Utilize appropriate tool chains and methodology to transfer UX design artifacts to implementing teams
  • Establish customer connections and associated processes to proactively research user experience in advance of implementation.  
  • Lead the definition of new UI requirements and wireframes 
  • Effectively communicate UI designs and requirements to engineering for development.
  • Establish quantitative and qualitative metrics of improvement in user experience.  Execute a UCD process that results in demonstrable improvement in these metrics
  • Utilize a cost-effective methodology for obtaining and incorporating end user feedback as part of the UCD process
  • Establish design acceptance criteria for the product and ensure that the implementation meets design standards.

Skills and Experience

Require Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interaction Design, Human Factors, Psychology, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or equivalent and at least ten (10) years’ relevant work experience.
  • At least ten years of work experience in Interaction Design, Human Factors, User Interface design, or User Experience design
  • Expert knowledge of UX prototyping tools and methodologies
  • Advanced knowledge of contemporary user interface technologies and advanced understanding of engineering costs to implement user experience designs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. You must be able to communicate design ideas to the internal development and product management teams.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority.
  • Expert knowledge of usability principles, web standards, and UI patterns.
  • Understanding of modern software development and deployment practices.
  • Experience with human factors principles and working knowledge of various UX research methods including user personas, user flows and usability testing. 
  • Advanced knowledge of software development methodologies and how to incorporate UCD into them
  • Demonstrable success in the introduction of User Centric Design into a product development organization
  • Demonstrable success in creating user experience as a differentiating factor in a product offering.

Preferred:

  • At least seven years of experience applying user centric design within modern software development and deployment practices.
  • Experience with SCADA
  • Experience in electric utility business
  • At least five years of experience applying user centric design within Agile software development methodology
  • At least five years of experience applying user centric design to the development of B2B software applications
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one contemporary user interface technology


Physical Demand:
Frequent sitting and walking.
Normal office and laboratory activities.
Limited travel on an as needed basis.


 

Education

Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
