Position Overview

The staff accountant is responsible for warranty and returned goods accounting, inventory valuation and product costing, capital expenditure management, and supporting the business to analyze its actual costs against plan to identify root causes for variances.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supervising customer warranty claims and returned goods to ensure their accuracy in accounting for these costs in a timely manner. Activities include supervising the status of claims with the Operations team, verifying accuracy of the RMA data, and ensuring a proper reconciliation to the general ledger.
  • Responsible to work with Product Management and Operations to regularly monitor the sufficiency of warranty reserves and perform the detailed annual refresh of these reserves.
  • Prepare analysis of warranty and RMA claims.
  • Responsible for maintaining and preparing standard cost estimates.
  • Prepare analysis of product costs, purchase price variances, freight charges.
  • Handle capital expense programs, working with project managers to understand actual costs versus budget and anticipate potential cost overruns.
  • Perform month-end close routines, including preparing journal entries, balancing inventory perpetual records, and preparing account reconciliations.
  • Assist with monthly margin and expense variance analysis; support the controllers to prepare financial cost analysis.
  • Analyze financial transactions for errors or deficiencies, takes action to resolve / correct disconnects, and implements improvements to prevent recurrences.
  • Support project accounting reporting and analysis by ensuring accurate set-up in the ERP system and monitoring transactions to ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Skills and Experience


  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication and analytical skills
  • Self-starter who can work independently and complete projects effectively
  • Able to work hands on within the various departments of the organization and communicate effectively up the chain of command.
