Job Overview

Provide technical excellence in developing, sustaining, and supporting firmware associated with high‑volume electronic products within the AMI and utility communications industry. Contribute to firmware architecture, documentation, and deliverables from concept through production launch. Participate in product deployment and provide support in resolving customer and field technical issues. Function as a technical expert and project contributor when required.

A Day In The Life

  • Develop firmware requirements, architecture, design, and code for new and existing products.
  • Design and implement embedded firmware for microcontroller‑based systems.
  • Develop multi‑threaded RTOS‑based firmware using semaphores, mutexes, watchdog timers, and related mechanisms.
  • Develop unit and integration test methods to ensure system requirements are met.
  • Ensure designs meet or exceed requirements of governing agencies (FCC, UL, ANSI, etc.) and support verification testing.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of structured firmware and product development processes.
  • Help establish and follow proper firmware design processes for high‑reliability products.
  • Analyze and resolve field and production issues through formal root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Support the work of other engineers on cross‑functional project teams
  • Participate in technical, design, and peer reviews of firmware deliverables
  • Serve as lead firmware developer or technical lead when required.
  • Support manufacturing, deployment, and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical knowledge sharing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

What will help you thrive in this role?

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in analysis, design, coding, and testing of embedded C firmware.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing firmware using Real‑Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Experience developing multi‑threaded embedded applications.
  • Strong understanding of microcontrollers and hardware interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, ADC/DAC, GPIO).
  • Advanced debugging and troubleshooting skills.
  • Working knowledge of source code control and defect tracking systems.
  • Experience using static source code analysis tools and methods.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with ARM, MSP430, and/or PIC microprocessors.
  • Experience with Freescale MQX, Micrium, FreeRTOS, or similar RTOS platforms.
  • Experience developing firmware design documentation (requirements, flowcharts, state diagrams).
  • Experience with networking or communication protocols.
  • RF or wireless communication system experience.
  • Electronic communication systems background.
  • Project estimation and tracking experience.
  • Experience in the utility or AMI industry.
  • Advanced engineering degree.
