Hubbell Power Systems (HPS) engages in the design and manufacture of a wide variety of products used by utilities. Position Overview

Senior position that develops complex embedded hardware products in the area of communications and teleprotection for the electric utility market. The individual should be able to develop designs independently, utilize assistance and design review by other senior members of the hardware team and to provide guidance to junior engineers, technicians and hardware consultants as required.

 

This individual must interface with other cross-functional teams, such as software development group, sales/marketing and production for various activities required in the course of the product development process.

 

The individual must be familiar and should have a proven track record of working with designs utilizing state-of-the-art microprocessors, digital signal processors, field programmable gate arrays, high-speed A/D-D/A conversion, DC to 500 kHz analog circuit, DC power conversion and should understand VHDL technology.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Key member of the new product development (NPD) team, participating in development of multiple products simultaneously. Takes on a lead role for a selected one or more development projects, managing the NPD process from design definition through design capture and verification, to the hand-off to production.
  • Participates in project reviews and in requirement gathering meetings with sales/marketing and systems engineering groups.
  • Responsible for design flow from architecture through prototype testing and production documentation. This includes hands-on circuit design, hardware verification and validation of new products. 
  • Performs final design reviews on all circuits and board designs, including mechanical aspects, needed to release for prototyping and for production.
  • Provides required guidance to Product Support Engineer for component selection and actively reviews BOM, costs and component sustainability. Closely works with PCB layout Engineer, CAD Engineer along with Manufacturing Engineering to develop feasible designs, production test procedures etc.
  • Guides creation of hardware bring-up and production test procedures and of plans to test/validate new designs. Assists with the design verification and validation to ensure that the completed design meets the requirements.
  • As needed, performs product sustaining activities for addressing hardware related field issues.

 

 

 

Skills and Experience

REQUIRED BACKGROUND:  

  • BSEE or equivalent degree, with a minimum of 4 years of embedded hardware design experience on industrial products. At least 1 year experience in developing FPGA-based designs.
  • Must be proficient with a proven track record in working with designs utilizing state-of-the-art microprocessors, digital signal processors, field-programmable gate arrays, high-speed A/D-D/A conversion, DC to 500 kHz analog circuit technology, DC power conversion.
  • Must have experience with Ethernet hardware (MAC, PHY, Switches).
  • Must proficiently use a schematic-capture tool, understand symbol/footprint creation, must be able to understand and review board layout.
  • Must understand design verification/validation and compliance test process.

DESIRED BACKGROUND:  

  • Experience with TDM communications and legacy interfaces (voice, synchronous data, asynchronous data) desirable.
  • Experience with Altium design tools, with Xilinx and ACTEL FPGA’s and development tools highly desirable.
  • Board layout abilities desirable.
  • Experience with any of the following a plus:
    • Power supply design
    • Amplifier design
    • Analog filter design
    • Ethernet backplane design

Education

Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering
