The Hardware Engineer is responsible for the electronic hardware design and development activities related to metering products associated with the deployment of the nationwide smart electrical grid.

Position Overview

The Hardware Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and manufacturing support of high-volume electromechanical products.  Participates in the overall hardware development of Aclara products, from schematic capture, PCB design, prototyping bring-up and debugging, test plan creation and functional verification. Additional critical responsibilities include development of project plans including establishing requirements, schedule and cost, testing and review/evaluation of electronic designs and components.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Electrical hardware development incorporating all aspects of hardware design from concept to production launch including circuit design, schematic design, PCB design, testing and documentation.
  • Ensure hardware captures and maintains system-level behavior that meets stated requirements.
  • Develop strategy to validate resulting design against requirements including the development of design verification test procedures.
  • Responsible for the overall quality of the hardware incorporated in the system, communicating progress and challenges during development with functional and project management and completing development on the agreed-to schedule.
  • Ensure all designs exceed requirements of governing agencies (e.g., FCC, UL) and must be capable of listing with these agencies where applicable.
  • Interact in a multi-disciplinary team environment to achieve the best possible product from all functional viewpoints.
  • Experience working in an environment where design staff and operations interact daily to manage component and product delivery issues.
  • Experience working directly with customers regarding product features and issues.
  • In collaboration with FW and validation teams, management of changes to the designed product during its Life Cycle.
  • Support other areas (Sourcing, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality Engineering, and Technical Support) as needed throughout the products Life Cycle.
  • Create manufacturing documentation such as BOMs, change orders, control records, and manufacturing test specifications.
  • Support the sourcing, manufacturing, and validation teams during prototype and validation activities.

Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with electrical hardware design and development activities associated with high volume, cost-sensitive commercial or industrial electronic products.
  • 1 or more years designing microprocessor-based instruments incorporating wireless and wired communication as well as precision analog circuitry.
  • Working understanding of Design Verification Testing at the circuit level.
  • Experience with board bring-up and solid trouble shooting methodology using common tools such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes and various types of handheld meters.
  • Competent working with Microsoft Office and related software operating on a Windows platform.

Valuable Traits/Experience

  • Experience mitigating immunity and emissions issues in analog/RF designs.
  • Experience with simulation tools such as Spice or Multisim to simulate analog circuit performance.
  • Experienced in industrialization and Life Cycle support of high-volume electronic products.
  • Good understanding of regulatory compliance requirements (EMC, Electrical safety, CE, RoHS and other in-country regulations test requirements).
  • Powerline: PLC (Prime, SFSK, G3), IEEE 1901.2, Home Plug AV/GreenPhy.
  • Schematic and layout package (Altium preferred).
  • Analog and High voltage design concepts, dielectric properties and breakdown of air, wiring, pcb, plastics etc
  • Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, RF Generator.
  • Meters, AMI, electric power industry, or Communications domain experience.
