- Direct the product development process by managing projects and personnel in a manner which maximizes resources and achieves company objectives. Oversee design proposals, costing, value engineering and project database management. Responsible for the management, scheduling and execution of engineering projects.
- Supervises multi-disciplinary teams of professional staff that may include mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, industrial designers, as well as product safety and photometric specialists. Ensure that department is appropriately staffed; handle all personnel decisions pertaining to hiring, firing, time off, training and feedback; and foster a collaborative work environment.
- Lead the product development effort from early concepts through coordination of design for manufacturing and production. Develop reports for senior management which track and measure engineering activities.
- Develop engineering policies and implement engineering procedures and techniques, striving for continual improvement and efficiencies.
- Ensure the interface with engineering is seamless and promotes teamwork across all inter-company functions.
- Establish, track, and manage department budget, with an expense responsibility as outlined.
- Interface with customers and suppliers to determine product requirements and resolve specification issues as needed.
- Identifies, qualifies, and manages consultants and outside resources as well as additional internal personnel required for the successful execution of team’s objectives including, but not limited to, technical specialists (electronics, optics, reliability, testing), Intellectual Property, and strategic partnerships.
- Maintain and expand internal measurement, testing, certification, prototyping and simulation capabilities.
- Represent and participate within intercompany activities, including involvement in on one or more committees
- Assume additional responsibilities as requested.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum of five years prior experience in Product Design, preferably within the lighting industry, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience; formal lighting education is desirable; MS is desired.
- Strong technical background with a working knowledge of photometric; architectural engineering and design; and modelling/rendering techniques.
- Superior understanding of manufacturing processes and technical relevance of current industry offerings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience managing multiple personality types, including creative and technical.
- Familiarity with CADD and photometric simulation software is required.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suites (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and a working knowledge of various engineering software tools.
- Experience with CNC machining equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, industrial production equipment, including plastic injection molding tooling and design is preferable.
- Experience managing multiple personality types, including creative and technical.
- Familiarity with CADD and photometric simulation software is required.
