Position Overview

This is a 1st shift position.  Hours typically are 7AM-3:30PM with occasional OT.  Under supervision, analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, and machinists' handtools

Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned:

  • From blueprints and verbal instruction, makes, constructs and assembles a wide variety of tools, jigs, fixtures of a less complex design and construction.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders and honing machine, to machine or fabricate parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  • Lifts machined parts and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable.
  • Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces with power grinders, and fits and assembles parts together into assemblies and mechanisms.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances.
  • Brazes and welds parts.

Skills and Experience

Mechanical skills necessary.  Must be able to read blue prints. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
