Position Overview
The Lead Protection Engineer is responsible for the protective relay product portfolio for transmission and distribution systems. Position is responsible for the protective relay design, protective relay setting coordination, development, and calculations. Position will work closely with product management, engineering, sales, as well as end customers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop high-voltage relay algorithms and protection philosophies.
- Responsible for working closely with engineering to design, update, enhance our portfolio of protective relay products including overall functionality, product design and customer requirements.
- Understand and apply knowledge of protection systems how they are created through the specification, evaluation, setting, and testing of protective relays and associated components
- Specify, design, and configure protection systems and remedial action schemes
- Provide in depth technical support (subject matter expert) on protective relay systems to internal and external customers.
- Identify technologies and processes to drive improvements in system operation, tools and organizational performance.
- Support field installation questions using system knowledge and specialized analysis.
- Attend meetings and conferences and research, as necessary, to keep informed of technical developments in the power industry.
- Utilize industry and discipline related knowledge to interpret and comply with regulations as required by NERC, FERC, WECC, EPA, NESC, OSHA, FCC, etc.
Skills and Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on high voltage and power distribution systems (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum five (5) years utility system protection engineering experience (15kV through to 500kV).
- Advanced analytical skills demonstrated in the analysis and definition of complex systems
- Proficiency in protective relay coordination and settings calculations for MV, HV and EHV in transmission and distribution systems.
- Proficient with substation protection and control design and industry standards
- Ability to create product specifications detailing functionality, performance, interfaces, and data processing.
- Highly motivated self-starter, capable of working independently and able to drive concepts to completion.
- Excellent organization, presentation, oral and written communication skills to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner
- Ability to effect constructive contributions from team members.
- Ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary functions (engineering, sales, operations, etc.).
- Excellent written and verbal skills. Solid public speaking skills; able to present ideas, conclusions, and recommendations with clarity to diverse business audiences.
- Strong attention to detail, and excellent organization and time management skills.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred:
- Power system analysis and associated programs
- Substation operations background or physical substation design experience
- General utility knowledge of transformers, capacitors, reactors, control systems, instrument transformers, communications theory
- Professional Engineer License
Physical Demand:
Less than 50% travel.
Team is headquartered in St. Louis, relocation strongly preferred, or travel as appropriate.
