Job Overview
The Lead Engineering Technician plays a critical role in supporting engineering operations by providing technical expertise, leadership, and hands-on assistance in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of systems and processes. This position serves as the primary liaison between engineering teams and production, ensuring that technical solutions are implemented effectively and meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
The Lead Engineering Technician is responsible for overseeing day-to-day technical activities, mentoring senior and junior technicians, and coordinating with engineers to troubleshoot complex issues. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
A Day In The Life
- Act as a liaison between Engineering Managers, project managers, project engineers and production to the correct engineering tech.
- Directing project work to engineer technicians and senior engineering technicians, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
- Provide clear directions for roles and responsibilities on each part of the project
- Ensure proficiency in customer packets before assigning engineering technicians, reducing write ups during testing
- Monitor Operations board to manage workflow and allocate resources to upcoming projects
- Work with project managers on future projects and forecast assignments
- Reduce WDTF and help contribute to pursuit of “Perfect Packet” initiative
- Provide metrics and check-adjust recommendations to Engineering Managers for Perfect Packet
- Oversee SOP and Standard Work development for each major Customer group
- Responsible for documenting and transitioning tribal knowledge into usable platforms
- Provide advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic support for equipment and systems.
- Collaborate with engineers to develop and implement process improvements.
- Train and mentor technicians on best practices, safety protocols, and technical procedures.
- Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, including test results and modifications.
- Manage training documents and standard work for each customer
- Ensure compliance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and safety guidelines.
- Coordinate and work with Area Managers to reduce Panel-Hold (Boneyard) inventory.
- Identify and address any Engineering hold issues to eliminate work stoppages. Investigate root causes and implement corrective actions/process improvement measures.
What will help you thrive in this role?
- Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum six plus years of experience in a similar environment
- The ability to read and understand electrical wiring and schematic diagrams
- Proficiency in Windows based software, to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
- Working knowledge of CAD software to include AutoCAD, Microstation a plus
- Understanding of electrical principles, electrical relaying and associated electronic devices
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to multitask given projects
- Ability to act independently as a facilitator and team lead
