Job Overview

The Safety Compliance Specialist is a key contributor to fostering a safe, compliant, and high performing manufacturing environment. This role provides dedicated safety support to the Production Supervisor and Production Manager, ensuring consistent adherence to all local, provincial, and federal regulatory requirements, including but not limited to Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA).

The ideal candidate is a proactive safety professional who excels in regulatory compliance, training coordination, data accuracy, and continuous improvement. This position plays a critical role in strengthening our safety culture through hands-on engagement, structured compliance management, and cross-functional collaboration.

A Day In The Life

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate compliance records for OHS, WCB, NPRI, environmental reporting, and other required regulatory bodies.
  • Manage and update accident/injury reporting systems and ensure timely submission of required data.
  • Support annual regulatory submissions and maintain hazardous waste manifests as required.
  • Participate in facility audits, track corrective actions, and ensure timely closure.

Safety Audits, Inspections & Risk Reduction

  • Conduct weekly safety Gemba audits and daily compliance checks to proactively identify hazards.
  • Execute and manage monthly Safety inspections, maintain audit records, and track followup actions.
  • Perform workplace inspections, document findings, and drive corrective action accountability.
  • Assist with the development, review, and maintenance of safety procedures (JSAs, SOPs, LOTO, etc.).

Training, Engagement & Continuous Improvement

  • Coordinate and deliver safety training programs including but not limited to:
    • Forklift Certification
    • HAZWOPER / HAZCOM
    • First Aid/CPR
    • OHS Compliance
    • Emergency Preparedness
    • LOTO
    • New Employee Safety Orientation
  • Support ongoing learning through Hubbell University and other approved platforms.
  • Create, distribute, and track weekly Safety Toolbox Talks.
  • Provide operational support during monthly safety committee meetings.
  • Support corporate initiatives such as SSIP, Kaizen events, and continuous improvement activities.

Incident Management & Reporting

  • Assist leaders with incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and incident reporting requirements.
  • Ensure all incidents, near misses, and injuries are accurately documented within the incident management system.
  • Support injury case management, workers’ compensation reporting, and modified-duty coordination.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required; post-secondary training in Occupational Health & Safety or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of safety experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or operational environment.
  • Working knowledge of Alberta OH&S legislation, environmental compliance, and industry best practices.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, organized, and professional information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage priorities, and collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to respond quickly and effectively in dynamic situations.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in documentation and data reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and ability to learn systems such as SAP.

Mathematical & Technical Abilities

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Comfortable analyzing safety metrics, trends, and audit data.

Scheduling

  • Flexibility to adjust work hours periodically to support training, audits, or compliance deadlines.
  • Standard Hours are onsite Monday – Thursday 7-3:30pm with flexibility to work form home Fridays 7am-3:30pm.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certifications (or progress toward) such as:
    • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional)
    • CHSC (Certified Health & Safety Consultant)
    • NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer)
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement programs (Lean, 5S, Kaizen).
  • Prior experience coordinating safety programs in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
