Job Overview
Responsible for Handling an Embedded Testing Team across Protection & Controls product lines and responsible for planning, designing, developing, and executing comprehensive test strategies to ensure the delivery of high‑quality products. This role involves close collaboration with development, product, and engineering teams to test/validate embedded products and Will lead testing strategies, identify issues early, automate test processes, and drive continuous quality improvements, develop automation frameworks.
A Day In The Life
- Conduct comprehensive functionality testing across protection and control products to ensure reliable operation under normal and fault conditions.
- Validate correct operation of protection schemes by simulating fault conditions and verifying product response.
- Expert in validating and testing industrial communication protocols like IEC 61850, IEC 60870, Modbus, DNP3
- Design and develop advanced test automation frameworks and scripts to enhance testing efficiency, accuracy, and coverage for embedded systems and communication protocols.
- Design, develop, and operate advanced Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), Firmware-in-the-Loop (FIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) test environments to simulate real-world grid conditions and validate embedded firmware performance.
- Extensive hands-on experience in testing and validating embedded communication interfaces and tools, including Serial Port Monitor, Tera Term, and Wireshark, along with modules such as Wi-Fi, BLE, USB, and Ethernet, ensuring reliable connectivity, data integrity, and protocol compliance.
- Conduct R&D for power system domain applications.
- Perform deep-dive debugging of embedded firmware and hardware interactions during system failures, utilizing oscilloscopes and logic analysers for detailed signal and timing analysis.
- Develop and interpret wiring diagrams to ensure accurate system understanding and effective fault isolation.
- Develop detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts based on product requirements and design documents.
- Define and implement overall testing strategies including functional, regression, performance, security, and automation testing.
- Knowledge in understanding Product Requirements, Marketing Requirements and deriving System Integration test cases.
- Contribute to risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
- Should be highly creative in coming up with out-of-box scenarios for testing and bugs
- Identify, analyse, and document defects using tracking tools
- Track defects through resolution and verify fixes
- Provide clear test reports, metrics, and dashboards to stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with developers, product owners, and architects to ensure testability and quality in every stage of development.
- Participate in design and code reviews with a quality-first perspective.
- Advocate for quality engineering practices and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior QA engineers.
- Lead test initiatives for large features or project modules.
- Perform end-to-end system analysis and design of complex systems (hardware, software, communications).
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Help establish and refine QA standards, processes, and documentation.
What will help you thrive in this role?
- Bachelor’s/master’s degree in electrical/Electronics/Software Engineering (or) Equivalent
- Minimum 10 to 15 years related Experiences in Protective Relaying & Substation Communication Solutions and Lateral Protection (Medium/High Voltage Products).
- Should have programming knowledge on Python, java, java script, Bash, Golang.
- Hands-on experience with IEC 61850 testing tools (e.g., Omicron IED Scout, Triangle Microworks test harness).
- Experience developing products in an Agile environment and understanding of SDLC, STLC
- Knowledge of secure communication protocols, authentication mechanisms, and data encryption techniques
- Experience with version control systems (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud environments (Azure/AWS/GCP)
- Added advantage of having Certified ISTQB Foundation level
- Experience on working with the test kit like Omicron CMC356,500, CPC100 and various make secondary/primary injection test kit
- Should have experience in Designing, Developing, and Testing real time embedded products.
- Should have knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical and Embedded Parameters
- Must Demonstrate consistent and sustainable application of problem solving and analytical skills.
- Competent working with Microsoft Office & related software operating on a Windows platform.
