Job Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and maintenance of Gleason Reel products, including cable reels, hose reels, festoon systems, cable carriers, and material handling solutions. The role involves 3D CAD modeling, engineering documentation, NPD support, and DFMA initiatives, working closely with global engineering teams to deliver innovative, manufacturable and cost-effective products.
This position is in HSPL Design center, Chennai and reports to Asst. Manager – Design.
A Day In The Life
CAD Modeling & Product Documentation
- Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
- Validate and update existing models to ensure dimensional accuracy and compliance with engineering standards.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly drawings, and part documentation.
- Support engineering change requests and drawing revisions.
- Standardize and organize engineering documentation within the Product Data Management (PDM) system.
New Product Development (NPD)
- Collaborate with Gleason engineers on new product development projects.
- Review Statements of Work (SoW), customer requirements, and design specifications.
- Develop concept designs and preliminary engineering solutions.
- Perform design calculations, component selection, and feasibility studies.
- Participate in design reviews and incorporate engineering feedback.
- Support prototype development, testing, and design validation activities.
Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA)
- DFMA reviews on existing products.
- Identify opportunities for Cost reduction, Manufacturing simplification, Assembly optimization, Part standardization, Weight reduction and Material optimization
- Support value engineering initiatives across product lines.
Design Automation & Productivity Improvement
- Develop Inventor iLogic automation tools and design templates.
- Support engineering process automation using VBA, Power Automate, and related tools.
- Develop configurable designs for highly customized product families.
What will help you thrive in this role?
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
- 6–10 years of experience in Mechanical Product Design and Development.
- Experience working with fabricated assemblies, sheet metal parts, machined components, weldments, and industrial equipment. Material handling equipment’s experience is preferred.
- Hands-on experience in New Product Development (NPD) projects.
- Good understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
- Must be proficient in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Product Data Management systems.
- Experience in BOM creation and engineering change management processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, etc.).
