Position Overview

Set up and operates own computer numerical control machines to cut, shape or form metal workpieces to specifications and performs all duties of Machine Operator – CNC as well as back up CNC specialist within the area by performing the following duties

Duties and Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities:  Include the following:  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures work piece in fixture according to set up instructions.  Can improvise fixturing as necessary.
  • Assembles cutting tools in toll holders and positions tool holders in machine tool changer as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
  • Downloads from shopnet into machine control console or enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed machine instructions from data base.
  • Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.  Conducts process debugging.  Has a complete understanding of G-codes, M-codes, etc.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as work or damaged cutting tools, changes inserts, end mill, drills, and reams as necessary.
  • Analyzes any production difficulties and corrects same or makes recommendations to the CNC Specialist or Production Supervisor.
  • Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process as specified in set up instructions.
  • Measures for conformance to specifications using CMM, micrometers, calipers, functional gages and blueprints.
  • Maintains required paperwork (i.e.: production logs, scrap ticket, etc…)
  • Notifies CNC Specialist or supervisor of job or of any discrepancies.
  • Changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
  • In the absence of CNC specialist, will set all machines within the specific area.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:  This job has not supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

Associate’s degree (A.A) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; and four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one–on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
