Position Overview

The Sr. Hardware Engineer (FPGA Design) will be a part of the engineering team which develops and supports complex embedded hardware products in the area of communications and protection for the electric utility market. The individual in this position should be able to perform all aspects of FPGA development work under the guidance of senior team members.

This individual must interface with other cross-functional teams, such as software development group, sales/marketing and production for various development and support activities.

The individual must be familiar and should have a proven track record of working with a wide range of state-of-the-art circuits comprised of Field-Programmable-Gate-Arrays (FPGA) and interfacing with microprocessors, DSP’s, high-speed analog devices, communication interfaces, power actuators.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design of FPGA core, validation & verification of new products, both by hands-on effort & in assistance to other team members.  Responsibilities range from FPGA implementation review and design coding, through prototype bring-up, to prototype testing & documentation.
  • Porting of existing FPGA Intellectual Property btween different vendors and different design entry methods.
  • Writing detailed SOW documents outlining FPGA Design requirements for offshore teams.
  • Working w offshore teams on weekly basis to make progress on the taskes/projects, resolve their technical queries to keep things moving progressing.
  • Being passionate and proficient in contributing to design reviews on various circuit & board designs.
  • Performing design verification tests, support system verification tests under guidance of sr team members.
  • Developing & documenting methods to insrument signals in units under tests, utilizing FPGA access or similar methods.
  • Loading embedded FPGA & software images on prototypes, document methods for other team members & production.
  • Troubleshooting prototypes in bring-up phase & afterwards, to assist in identifying FPGA & circuit design problems.
  • Work with considerable sense of urgency and juggle mulitple tasks/assignments at the same time.


Skills and Experience

  • BSEE degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience working with design and verification of FPGA code in a design or support role.
  • Must be proficient in VHDL coding, Verilog a plus. Must be able to understand and analyze schematic-capture design methods for PLD’s and FPGA’s.
  • Proven track record for FPGA simulation & test-bench development.
  • Excellent design documentation skills.
  • Must be proficient in designs utilizing Xilinx/AMD devices and design tools; experience with Actel/Microsemi is highly desirable; familiarity with other vendors (such as Altera/Intel or Lattice) is a plus.
  • Must have a very good understanding of electronic circuit design, in order to analyze and troubleshoot component interfacing and overall device functionality.
  • Must have experience in analyzing system/circuit design and in troubleshooting of circuits comprised of microprocessors and their support devices, such as DSP’s, high-speed analog devices, communication interfaces, and power actuators.
  • Familiarity with circuit schematic capture tools (such as Altium or P-CAD) is required, with board layout tools desirable.
  • Experience with communications interfaces (ranging from Nx64kb/s protocols through DS1/DS3 data formats) desirable.
  • Must be self-motivated & capable of handling numerous concurrent activities.
  • Must be a stron team player w excellent verbal & written communication skills.
