Job Overview

This position involves being a part of an Engineering team that designs, develops and sustains medium-voltage switchgear products for electric utilities in the area of Distribution Switching and Distribution Automation involving measurement, protection and communications.
The individual in this position will be responsible for mechanically designing, developing and sustaining various Medium-Voltage Switchgear products such as Single-phase reclosers, Sectionalizers, Three-phase reclosers and similar medium-voltage (MV) switchgear products used in the Distribution Automation domain. Design responsibilities include creating and implementing new design concepts/ideas for New Product Development initiatives along with Product Enhancements and Value Engineering (cost-take out) activities. Additionally, the individual must be able to successfully work with various cross-functional teams such as the Manufacturing team, Product Management team, Field Application Engineering team etc.  This position is for an engineer who is passionate, proficient and the one who will enjoy working on all aspects of launching new products. The individual must be able to work with a sense of urgency to deliver top-tier quality solutions to end-users.

A Day In The Life

•  Enhance/modify existing (legacy) Medium-Voltage Switchgear products for design improvements, design optimization based on internal and external customer requests. Qualify new designs by passing necessary Type tests and by meeting expected cost targets
•  Design Medium-Voltage Switchgear products for New Product Development projects as per Requirements Specifications; Qualify new designs with successfully passing necessary Type tests and by meeting expected cost targets.
•  Make effective and timely use of software/simulation tools such as DFMA, ANSYS and other Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques for design changes, validating new design concepts/ideas for all projects,
•  Be responsible for successfully passing various Type Tests on Medium-Voltage Switchgear designs are required to pass; Plan, manage and own this Type testing on new designs
•  Understand and modify solenoid-driven mechanisms for Vacuum Interrupters used in Medium-Voltage Switchgear products (reclosers, loadbreak switches etc.) as per desired specifications. Perform this task for Product enhancement activities as well as for Value Engineering (cost take out) projects.
•  Be hands-on with building first prototypes, new solenoid-driven mechanisms along with any other newly designed/modified parts in existing (legacy) products; Be hands-on in performing speed, bounce profiling for newly designed solenoid-driven mechanisms.
•  Mentor junior-level mechanical engineers (from the offshore team) for requested design changes by thoroughly understanding and then communicating requirements with them,
•  Be responsible for successfully running various Type Tests on Medium-Voltage Switchgear designs; Plan, manage and own this Type testing on new designs.
•  Few examples of such Type tests are – Impulse (BIL) test, Dry/Wet Power Frequency Withstand test, Partial discharge Test, Short-time (3 sec) Withstand test, Momentary (10-cycle) withstand test, Heat-rise test, Interruption testing (T20, T100) on Reclosers, Shock, Vibration Tests, Ingress protection tests etc.
•  Work with sourcing/purchasing teams to source/qualify newly designed parts; Work with manufacturing team to release newly designed parts to Production.
•  Be a go-getter with ability to get things done to help the business with new product development initiatives.
•  Play a critical and substantive role in meeting necessary timelines for solving field issues, developing new products by working with expected sense of urgency.

What will help you thrive in this role?

•  Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 7 years of experience in designing and developing industrial products,
•  Must be fluent in AutoCAD and SolidWorks packages for product designs, design changes. This individual should be fluent enough to make the changes and work on new designs himself as well as fluent in reviewing work of junior-level team members,
•  Must have technical core competence in designing, developing, and sustaining industrial products from a Mechanical Engineering perspective.
•  Must have performed hands-on design, development and sustaining engineering work on industrial Products for at least 5 years; Must have prior background of seeing, assessing, and resolving failures observed during Type Testing.
•  Must be able to maintain design ownership of Medium-Voltage Switchgear products for its Mechanical design with high degree of attention to details,
•  Must have multiple years of exposure to real-field issues related to industrial products and ability to understand and resolve them,
•  Must have a proven track record for effectively working with various cross-functional teams within the organization on various projects,
•  Must be a passionate Engineering leader who wants to contribute to the success of the business by solving engineering problems,
•  Must be a very good communicator with strong interpersonal skills, accessible, approachable and someone who breeds positive morale.
