Job Overview

Buyer II is responsible for managing purchasing activities for assigned commodities while leading and supporting continuous improvement and productivity initiatives. This role partners with suppliers and internal stakeholders to negotiate effectively, improve supplier performance, and achieve business objectives. Success in this position requires a strong foundation in purchasing and sourcing practices, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment.

A Day In The Life

  • Manage purchase order creation, confirmation, and maintenance.
  • Partner with internal teams to review priorities and provide status updates on open orders.
  • Meet regularly with suppliers to review performance metrics and action plans.
  • Monitor open orders to ensure on-time delivery and expedite materials when needed.
  • Support resolution of supplier quality and payment issues with internal teams and suppliers.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for assigned commodities and related systems.
  • Support the onboarding of new suppliers and vendors.
  • Collaborate with sourcing and commodity managers to execute sourcing initiatives.
  • Drive process improvements, simplify workflows, refine practices, and resolve problems proactively.
  • Identify sources of supply, evaluate total cost alternatives, and build strong supplier relationships.
  • Ensure uninterrupted material supply while optimizing cost, lead time, and quality.
  • Conduct competitive quotations and cost analyses on a regular basis.
  • Lead or support supplier negotiations as needed.
  • Provide management with reports and insights on market conditions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Share knowledge and support the development of purchasing team members.
  • Provide coverage for team members during travel and vacation periods.

What will help you thrive in this role?

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of purchasing and/or sourcing experience.
  • Understanding of drawing nomenclature and familiarity with engineering terminology.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience with major MRP systems and related tools.
  • Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze issues and resolve problems quickly.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel as needed (approximately 15%).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in SAP.
  • APICS/ASCM certification or other relevant purchasing certification.
