Job Overview

The Sr. Engineering Development Manager will lead and coordinate programs in engineering using engineering skills and project management expertise. The SEDM ensures plan requirements from internal customers are met by understanding the entire engineering program lifecycle and leveraging skills to effectively and efficiently complete tasks in keeping with the platform and system designs. This includes managing program schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating them to engineering program stakeholders and other functional areas. The SEDM is expected to provide guidance and leadership to other Development Managers.

A Day In The Life

  • Create integrated program plans with deliverables ensuring subsystem alignment with platforms.
  • Drive design documentation during subsystem development, establish critical path and priorities.
  • Track milestones and integration step deliverables at subsystem level, compute schedule risk analysis/contingency/resource plans.
  • Use technical and leadership expertise to manage programs of various size and scope, identifying opportunities for improving processes to drive programs to completion.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to less senior staff and implement process improvements to drive efficiency and growth.
  • Chair weekly subsystem execution control meetings, lead subsystem design peer reviews and represent program at management reviews.
  • Ensure test specifications and implementations trace to requirements and design specifications.
  • Work across engineering to identify and bridge gaps in programs identified by engineering management.
  • Interact and coordinate outside of engineering especially to PMO to solve cross functional problems.
  • Escalate to and resolve problems with Product Management.
  • Own third party engineering development contracts and projects.
  • Troubleshoot issues and coordinate solutions with internal and external engineering teams and partners/suppliers.
  • Coordinate engineering prototype builds.
  • Organize and drive software, firmware, mechanical, electrical hardware and RF development resources.
  • Organize and drive Lab qualification testing
  • Organize and drive Functional Verification and System Integration Test
  • Organize and drive internal and external product documentation (manuals, product specifications)
  • Support external engineering support service relationships and provides process consistency to outsourcing efforts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with program stakeholders.
  • Report key statistics to stakeholders within the organization. This includes managing and reporting on change requests, managing the execution of maintenance action items, cost status details especially with Lead System Designer (LSD) and administration of other related activities.
  • Understand competitor technologies and costs at subsystem levels and track all subsystem costs and conduct root cause/recovery with Sourcing, Manufacturing and LSD.
  • Work independently and proceeds with objectives with minimal supervision.

  • Minimum of 10 years work experience on an engineering product development team.
  • PMP or other Project Management certifications.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who is a team player and supports the success of others.
  • Experience identifying and defining stakeholder needs. 
  • Experience developing effective and efficient problem solutions.
  • Experience developing and launching products to high volume production.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management and communication skills.
  • Preferred:
  • Certification in six sigma and lean processes.
  • Strong professional etiquette and ability to defuse and resolve conflicts.
  • Experience in complex electronic devices.
  • Experience with six sigma and lean processes.
  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering
