Position Overview

Hubbell Research is responsible for conceiving of, maturing, and demonstrating novel technologies to be used throughout Hubbell’s extensive product line. We are conducting research in sensors, controls, communications, analytics (including machine learning and AI), and electronic and electro-mechanical devices.  This requires extremely talented, highly motivated, and productive researchers with both breadth and depth of expertise across a variety of fields in electrical and mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, and mathematics. 

The Staff Engineer is a member of the research staff.  The Staff Engineer will contribute as a theorist, experimentalist, or practitioner within their chosen field of expertise.  Qualified candidates will have a record of outstanding research in a relevant field as well as excellent critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform research tasks in one or more of Hubbell’s five technology focus areas (sensors, controls, communications, analytics, or devices).
  • Make contributions to scientific and engineering understanding by application of first principals with scientific and mathematical rigor.  Test and codify abstract ideas to explain observed phenomenon.
  • Conduct laboratory and field experiments to test hypotheses.  Analyze data collected in this way to prove or disprove hypotheses. 
  • Implement newly developed technologies in prototype platforms for experimentation and demonstration.
  • Provide written documentation of all research (successful and otherwise).
  • Communicate research to stakeholders throughout Hubbell and the industry.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to product development as technologies are integrated into Hubbell products.
  • Additonal duties as assigned

Skills and Experience

  • 5 or more years’ experience in industrial or academic research
  • Publication and/or patent record demonstrating significant technical depth and experience
  • Outstanding critical thinking skills
  • A penchant for thinking creatively about problems with no known solutions
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical issues to a breadth of audiences


Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering
