Division Overview

Position Overview

This role focuses on key new product development processes and the associated interaction with customers / channel partners, marketing, manufacturing, onshore and offshore engineering centers.  The primary objectives are to drive New Product Development projects ensuring successful product launches on schedule. Secondary objectives are to ensure that key customer requirements are incorporated into new products and that products are fully compliant with all required safety standards.

Reports To:  VP of Engineering

Internal relationships: Marketing, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Product Engineering, Quality Control, Production Control, Engineering Services, Purchasing.

External Relationships: Tool vendors, component vendors, Model or Prototype Shops, Listing and Certification agencies, customers, OEM Engineers, Off Shore Design entities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure Voice of the Customers is effectively reflected in the scope and requirements of key new product development (NPD) projects.
  • Ensure that NPD business cases have the required information prior to submission to management for project approval.
  • Manage specific NPD projects as assigned.
  • Evaluate and assign work in accordance with priorities and individual skills.
  • Annually evaluate performance of individual subordinates.
  • Prepare and maintain project schedules.
  • Develop and institute concepts and solutions to design and application problems.
  • Check design concept and layouts, review and assist in design work with regard to function, safety, cost, project definition, and conformance to Codes and Standards. Check and evaluate models and drawings.  Designate pertinent testing and evaluate results.  Evaluate designs using DFMA principles.
  • Review with and obtain approval from Director of Engineering/VP Engineering of all phases of project assignment.
  • Schedule required project reviews and secure agreement with other departments (Sales, Manufacturing, etc.) on project direction.
  • Keep up to date and support new / revised industry standards, regulatory agency and code requirements and secure necessary approvals for new and revised products (UL, CSA, IEC, etc.).
  • Keep up to date on new materials, processes and applications as they apply to our products and recommend improvements (performance, cost, etc.).
  • Identify and recommend improvements to the design engineering process.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to the product development process.
  • Identify and recommend training needed to improve efficiency.
  • Additional responsibilities and tasks to be assigned as needed based on organizational and company needs.


Skills and Experience


Experience Requirements:

  • 10 yrs engineering experience at project level Design & Engineering of Electro–Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic product
  • 5 years of Engineering Management experience is required
  • Strong team leadership, interpersonal and facilitation skills needed
  • Strong project management skills required
  • PMP certification a plus
  • Hands on design experience utilizing CAD required 
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering
